The Passage

Orina will not be for charter in 2013.  Instead, we are just going to have a relaxed, fun trip.  We’ll leave the San Juan Islands in late June, have a leisure trip through British Columbia and the Spirit Bear country, visit some favorite places in Alaska, and return in September.  I am looking for friends or crew who would like to go for all or part of the journey.  We will share expenses for fuel and food.  If you think you might be interested, send me an email and we can explore possibilities.

While the Inside Passage takes us through remote and beautiful country, we are always within reach of float plane or land based travel.  So it is possible to join us at almost any part of the journey for as long as your time permits.  Of course, going the whole way is the trip of a lifetime.

Like Paris, The Inside Passage is a moveable feast.  The best things happen unexpectedly.  So, we map out a general float plan and it evolves.

We will leave Deer Harbor on Orcas Island between June 15 and 30.  Then north through the Gulf Islands with a stop for dinner at Genoa Bay Cafe.  Through Dodd Narrows and a day sightseeing in Nanaimo and last minute provisions.

Then across the Straits of Georgia to Pender Harbor and Lund.  A few days in Desolation Sound will be the only place on the way where the water is warm enough for swimming.

We will spend some time in the area around Alert Bay where the northern resident pods of Orca Whales spend their summers.  We will visit the First Nations museum in Alert Bay and perhaps visit an ancient village site.

Through British Columbia we will visit some of the most magnificent country, filled with waterfalls, bears, salmon, porpoises, eagles and who knows what else.

After provisioning again in Prince Rupert, we will cross the Dixon Entrance to Alaska.  Ketchikan, Petersburg and Sitka.  Glacier Bay and finally to anchor in my favorite secluded cove where we can watch grizzlies, catch halibut, and soak in natural hot springs.

For more details see my stories on the page, “Inside Passage” on this website.
